The cherry blossom season in March is always a popular time for tourists to visit Japan. This year, however, it may not have been the only reason why more than 3.1 million visitors - a one-month record, according to Japan's National Tourism Organisation - visited the Land of the Rising Sun. Foreign tourists have been making the most of their harder currencies such as the euro and dollar to gain from an advantageous exchange rate with Japan's weaker currency. Airbnb is well known for promoting unusual - some may say gimmicky - listings, ranging from Barbie’s Dream House to Shrek’s Swamp from the animated classic. For May, the holiday rental company has launched a new category they’re calling Icons. Eleven have been released so far, ranging from a once-in-a-lifetime stay at Paris’ iconic Musée d’Orsay during the Olympics, to a night in the balloon festooned house from Pixar favourite ‘Up’. None of the Airbnbs on offer are permanent, meaning very few people will be able to try them out. If you’re keen, though, the Icons are featured in their own cate...

A Taliban-run institute is training tourism and hospitality professionals to attract visitors to Afghanistan. Its debut student cohort consists of around 30 men, who are being trained in a Kabul classroom. The students vary in age, education level and professional experience. They're all men - Afghan women are banned from studying beyond sixth grade - and they don't know anything about tourism or hospitality. But they are all eager to promote a different side of Afghanistan. And the Taliban are happy to help. Afghanistan’s rulers are pariahs on the global stage, largely because of their restri...

Namibian authorities have heavily criticised a group of tourists who posed naked on the popular ‘Big Daddy’ dune in the Namib desert. Three male visitors are said to have taken their clothes off for pictures and videos during a dune safari after hiking up the sandbank, which is more than 300 metres tall. The resulting images were then shared on social media and circulated widely. That prompted local officials to say they were “shocked” by the incident and to claim that the act was a public indecency violation of park regulations and national law. How did the incident at Big Daddy dune come abo...

Venice residents have rallied against a day-tripper fee for visitors, implemented to combat excess tourism. Protesters argue that the fee turns the famous city into a 'theme park' and that it won't address the real issues they face. Hundreds of Venetians marched though the city's main bus terminal holding banners reading “No to Tickets, Yes to Services and Housing”. Protesters scuffled briefly with police with riot gear who blocked them from entering the city, before changing course and entering over another bridge escorted by plainclothes police officers. The demonstration eventually wrapped ...

Visitors to Venice who fail to pay the entry fee to the historic city centre will face fines starting at 10 times the €5 ticket price. Starting this year, tourists will have to pay to enter the lagoon city, a move authorities have introduced to clamp down on overtourism. The charge will be in place on 29 days between April and mid-July. “We need to find a balance, a new balance between the tourists and residents,” said the municipal councillor for tourism, Simone Venturini. “We need to safeguard the spaces of the resident, of course, and we need to discourage the arrival of day trippers on par...

April is set to be an exciting month for Romania and Bulgaria. On 31 March, the Balkan nations started the process of joining the Schengen Area as controls were lifted at air and sea borders. Discussions about lifting controls at land borders - which would see the two countries properly join the Schengen Area - are still ongoing. While both nations have been members of the European Union since 2007, they are still obliged to show passports upon entry to other EU countries, unlike many other European citizens. In 2024, border controls for the two countries will be simplified and it’s likely man...
