The northern French region of Aisne suffered heavy mudslides following a bout of rain between May 1st and May 2nd. The town of Courmelles was particularly affected, with a 57-year-old woman dying after being swept away by mudslides. Her partner was also injured and taken to hospital. The mayor of Courmelles set up a centre to help those impacted by the event, and warned citizens to take protective measures. Fifty-six firefighters were deployed in order to help with search and rescue effort. In Paris, storms on Wednesday prevented around forty flights from landing, which were eventually diverte...

Hong Kong saw 9,437 cloud-to-ground lightening strikes across a 14-hour period beginning at 9pm on Tuesday, as severe storms lashed the territory, according to the Observatory. The Observatory said that heavy showers and squally thunderstorms will continue during Wednesday’s May Day holiday: “Showers will be heavy at times. Moderate east to northeasterly winds, gusty at times.” The thunderstorm warning was first hoisted at 7.17pm on Tuesday and remained in force on Wednesday morning alongside an amber rainstorm warning. Delays continued at Hong Kong’s international airport, with several planes...

Airlines have hit back against EU plans to monitor contrails from aircraft, claiming too little is known about their climate impact to regulate them. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) says it’s too soon to implement regulations as there are still “gaps” in scientific knowledge about their impact. New EU regulations will see airlines required to measure and report non-CO2 emissions from flights from January 2025. That would include contrails, nitrogen oxides and sulphur. Contrails or condensation trails are created when ice crystals form around tiny particles of carbon emitted ...

The risk of avalanches can be predicted by artificial intelligence (AI) just as well as by humans, according to the findings of a three-year research project in Switzerland. The Swiss Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) released their report in Davos on Tuesday. The researchers say that machine-trained algorithms and humans have different strengths and weaknesses and can therefore complement each other well. The SLF has been working with AI models for three years, and found that their predictions are often good. "Sometimes they are clearly not, but even we are sometimes wrong," sai...

Global wine production reached a historic low in 2023 and climate change could be to blame, a new report has revealed. The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) says the drink hit its lowest level since 1962. This intergovernmental organisation has 50 member states, representing 75 per cent of the world’s vineyard area. Experts blame “extreme environmental conditions” including droughts and fires that have been driving the downward trend in production. Though climate change is not entirely to blame, the OIV says, these conditions are the greatest challenge the industry is facing. V...

Late spring overnight frosts in Germany's wine-growing regions have raised concerns among winemakers about potential impacts on the harvest. The German Winegrowers' Association (DWV) fears that the cold temperatures could damage wine yields this year: "The frosts at this point in time are so devastating because the vegetation is already well advanced after the recent months of record heat," DWV President Klaus Schneider told the Funke Mediengruppe newspaper chain on Friday. "The young, fertile shoots are now freezing, and those that grow back may not be fertile," he said. That means that wineg...
