We’re quickly approaching the unveiling of the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison. Prototypes have been spotted, and most recently, Chevrolet Performance engineers rolled out a distinctive camouflaged ZR2 during a three-day Vegas-to-Reno off-road blast across the Nevada desert with select media in the new 2023 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2.
Walkaround videos of the new Colorado ZR2 Bison immediately provided a closer look at some off-road components that will make it stand out above the already incredible Colorado ZR2. However, it’s unclear if this equipment is going to be standard, optional, or available as accessories.
Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison Prototype: Details
One of the first things that stand out on the truck is its height, about two inches taller than the standard 2023 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, and this comes from larger tires, as well as a suspension lift. The Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires on the new Colorado ZR2 Bison measure 35 inches and are wrapped around beadlock-capable wheels, much like the ZR2 Desert Boss it will replace. As part of the ZR2 formula, the new Bison features a new set of Multimatic DSSV dampers that sample “take-apart” pieces, indicating that the Colorado ZR2 Bison will have unique suspension tuning.
While looking underneath the wheel wells, the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison prototype appeared to have extra suspension travel above the 9.9 inches of front travel and 11.6 inches of rear travel found on the standard ZR2. This speculation comes from the presence of unique Chevrolet Performance-branded hydraulic front and rear bump stops, which are meant to cushion the landing and soak up the extremes of compression travel.
While the entire truck was wrapped in camouflage, not everything was hidden from prying eyes, and an inspection of one of the tunable engineering-sample DSSV dampers showcases the word “Bison” on one of the ID stickers, which gives the most significant indication as to what this truck is. As the midsize truck performance wars are in full swing, with the Ford Ranger Raptor, new Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, Jeep Gladiator 4xe, and midsize Ram EV on the way, the winner will once again be the customer who will have plenty of options to choose from.
