Juveniles charged after firing toy guns that injured 26 students at N.J. school

Four juveniles are accused of shooting 26 students at an Ocean County school with beads from a high-powered water gun during gym class, police said Wednesday.

The incident happened at Toms River Intermediate School South on Pinewald Road in Beachwood on Monday, according to local police. Officers were called to the school around 2:30 p.m., police said.

The students who were struck were examined by the school’s nurse and determined not to be seriously injured. The students were immediately returned inside following the shooting, police said.

The minors used Orbeez guns, which shoot hydrated beads, in the incident, police said. Their brand is based in Texas, according to a website for guns. They’re also sold through various online retailers, including Amazon.

The juveniles were tracked down to a Beachwood residence. Three Orbeez guns were seized from a car associated with the shooting.

The minors also are accused in a separate incident on Mizzen Avenue, where an unnamed victim was shot in the leg but didn’t suffer serious injuries, police said.

The juveniles are charged with harassment and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Beachwood police ask anyone with information about the case to contact them at 732 286-6000, ext. 100.
