Bipartisan Response: Johnson And Jeffries Comment On McConnell's Departure

Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, responded on Leader Mitch McConnell’s announcement of his forthcoming resignation as Senate Republican Leader in November.

In his statement, Speaker Johnson acknowledged McConnell’s remarkable journey from his humble origins, overcoming polio to ascend to one of the most significant roles in Senate leadership. Johnson highlighted McConnell’s trajectory from a legislative aide to the helm of the upper chamber.

“No Member of Congress has played a greater role in reshaping the federal judiciary than Mitch. I join my colleagues in saluting his historic contributions to the Republican Party and to the Congress. His legacy will endure for generations.” said Johnson.

Democratic Leader Jeffries noted that he and McConnell “often disagreed” but maintained a respectful relationship. He highlighted McConnell’s bipartisan efforts, citing the passage of laws such as The First Step Act and his support for Ukraine against Russian aggression.

Jeffries wished McConnel and his family the best as he enters this next chapter in his professional career.
