3 face animal cruelty charges after dog found in crate, barely able to stand, cops say

Three Bergen County residents face animal cruelty charges after a dog was found in a metal crate in a dark area of a basement, barely able to stand and exposed to its own urine and feces, according to police.

Police said they received a tip on Feb. 25 that a dog was being neglected or abused in a home in the 100 block of Hamilton Road in Teaneck.

Teaneck police executed a court-authorized search of the home and found a female gray Bull Terrier “located inside of a metal crate in a dark area of the basement,” Police Chief Andrew R. McGurr said in a statement on Friday.

“The canine could barely stand and the crate was lined with a cardboard box soiled with urine and feces,” McGurr said.

Bergen County Animal Control officers were called and took custody of the animal. “Due to its physical condition, it had to be carried to their vehicle,” McGurr said.

The dog was taken to the animal control emergency room in Teterboro for treatment and evaluation, McGurr said.

Three adults in the home — ages 36, 40 and 68 — were each charged with two counts of third-degree animal cruelty. One of the residents was also charged with obstruction for refusing officers’ commands and resisting their control, McGurr said.
