House Democratic Leader Champions Women's Rights Amidst GOP Assault On Reproductive Freedom

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries issued a statement for Women’s History Month, celebrating women nationwide and emphasizing the ongoing battle for “true equality” amid MAGA Republican’s attack on reproductive freedom.

“Women’s History Month is a time to honor the generations of women who have broken barriers and forged progress, ” said Jeffries.

“At every pivotal moment in America’s history, women have stepped up and pushed our nation closer to its founding ideals.”

Jeffries has been pushing legislative efforts in the House to protect rights for women which “have long been assumed to be permanent here in America” following Supreme Court decisions that ripped those assumed freedoms away.

“We must stand firm in our commitment to advancing the rights of women and girls in the United States and around the world,” noted Jeffries.

In 2022, the Supreme Court struck down Roe v Wade leading to limited abortion access to Americans. This decision led to several states such as Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and many others to roll back access to abortion, including some states outright denying abortion to women in almost all cases.

In February, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are to be considered children, which will put IVF treatment in danger.

‌”As extreme MAGA Republicans continue to attack reproductive freedom and attempt to criminalize abortion care and IVF, House Democrats are dedicated to defending every woman’s right to make her own health care decisions,” said Jeffires.

The theme for 2024 is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.”

Jeffries remarked, “This month and every month, we celebrate the women who have shaped our history and we recommit ourselves to the fight for true equality.”
