Divisive Godzilla movie that rebooted the franchise hits Netflix 'Top 10'

Monster movies make for amazing cinematic experiences, but there’s only one behemoth we can crown king of the monsters, and that’s Godzilla. The creature first appeared on screens in the 1954 film Godzilla from Japanese filmmaker Ishirō Honda, spawning a long-running franchise that eventually expanded into American movies. Speaking of which, Netflix invites you to witness the rebirth of the franchise with an epic that divided audiences in 2014…

Godzilla movie from 2014 hits Netflix ‘Top 10’

The 2014 blockbuster Godzilla was added to Netflix on Friday, March 1st 2024, and it’s currently ranked at No. 7 on the streamer’s ‘Top 10’ movies chart.

Directed by Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, The Creator), the film served as a reboot of Toho Co. Ltd.’s monster movie franchise, while also serving as the second Godzilla movie to be produced entirely by a Hollywood studio, following in the footsteps of the 1998 Roland Emmerich reboot.

It follows Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Ford Brody, a soldier who attempts to reunite with his family amidst a backdrop of Godzilla fighting against two creatures named MUTOs: Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms.

Co-starring Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, and Marvel‘s Elizabeth Olsen, the movie marked the first installment of the MonsterVerse, a franchise and shared universe with Kong from Legendary Pictures.

Godzilla has a 76% Rotten Tomatoes critic score based on 330 reviews, whereas the audience score is bumped down to 66% based on over 100k ratings.

It was rather divisive upon release among die-hard Godzilla fans and general audiences alike because the titular monster only had roughly 11 minutes of screentime. However, its addition to Netflix may earn it some new fans as people flock to see it for the first time.

“It’s finally on Netflix,” one tweeted. “About to watch Godzilla (2014) for the first time.” Another similarly tweeted “I’ve been dying to watch Godzilla and the one I want to watch is now on Netflix!”

How many movies in the MonsterVerse?

The MonsterVerse is made up of five movies spanning from 2014 to now:

  • Godzilla (2014)
  • Kong: Skull Island (2017)
  • Godzilla: King Of The Monsters (2019)
  • Godzilla Vs. Kong (2021)
  • Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)

That’s five in total with the fifth yet to reach screens…

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire release date

The Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire release date is set for Friday, March 29th 2024.

Following the events of Godzilla Vs. Kong, this latest chapter in the MonsterVerse sees the two titular titans team up against a powerful new enemy in the form of Star King, a gigantic ape-like creature who rules the Hollow Earth.

It’s opening exclusively in theaters, but until then, there’s plenty of time to catch up with the franchise.
