'I was told': Journalist shares what Richarlison was doing in training before Postecoglou's injury update

Alasdair Gold has shared what he was told about what Richarlison was doing in training late on in the week just before Ange Postecoglou ruled the Tottenham Hotspur forward out for up to four weeks due to a knee injury.

Richarlison picked up a knee injury in the loss to Wolves last month. It was a big blow with the 26-year-old scoring nine Premier League goals from mid-December.

It was a run of form which saw the Brazilian silence a lot of his doubters and critics, and prove that he can be capable of leading the line for Ange Postecoglou‘s side.

Uncertainty over when Richarlison will return for Tottenham

So it was a big blow for Tottenham to lose Richarlison for a number of weeks.

Intriguingly, Richarlison himself suggested after Spurs’ win over Crystal Palace that he hoped to be back for the next game against Aston Villa – despite Postecoglou ruling him for some time.

And speaking on his YouTube channel, Alasdair Gold suggested that Postecoglou’s comments came as a surprise given what he had been told about Richarlison’s training.

“I must admit there was a while where I was a bit wary of going too strong on Richarlison’s injured when we started to hear. I knew he was injured, but I didn’t think it was that bad because I was told that on either Thursday or Friday that he was seen doing running at Hotspur Way. Which yeah, if your knee’s awful, you probably don’t put too much pressure on it,” he said.

“The fact that he was doing some individual work showed that maybe it wasn’t the worst thing in the world. But then Postecoglou said three to four weeks.”

Potential boost for Spurs before Aston Villa clash

Of course, Tottenham fans have already been treated to a team selection surprise before facing Aston Villa this season. Rodrigo Bentancur made his return to the starting lineup in the reverse fixture in late November.

So there will be some hope amongst fans that Richarlison could yet be involved in some capacity in that vital top-four clash.

The good news is that Tottenham have the attacking depth to potentially cope without Richarlison. They put three past Crystal Palace on Saturday, with Timo Werner and Heung-min Son amongst the goalscorers.

But clearly, Villa will be a lot happier if Richarlison is nowhere to be seen next Sunday.
