WhatsApp photos saving 'twice' in camera roll is eating away at storage

iPhone users are frustrated about losing storage space on their devices as they claim all the media from WhatsApp – photos and videos – are being saved “twice” in their camera rolls.

If you have the auto-save option turned on, the media shared with you on WhatsApp gets downloaded to your camera roll automatically. Some users, however, are finding duplicates now.

iPhone users complain about WhatsApp saving photos ‘twice’

Several WhatsApp users have raised complaints about their media getting saved “twice” on their camera roll, which means there is a duplicate of every photo and video they’ve received on the app.

The issue appears to have occurred only for iPhone users over the last few days.

This has resulted in their camera roll getting “cluttered” with duplicates, and the only way to solve the issue is by manually deleting them.

Users are frustrated because clearing their phone gallery only to delete the duplicats takes time and is energy-consuming.

Addressing the issue, one user said: “I have this issue as well, oddly enough it’s only regular WhatsApp, WhatsApp Business doesn’t have the issue.”

“Same here, started happening yesterday. There might be some recent update with a bug. Probably gonna be corrected soon,” added another.

A third user said: “I thought my new iPhone was hacked or something. This is annoying.”

“Mine and wife’s phones both started doing this yesterday,” complained another.

How to stop the app from saving media

WhatsApp hasn’t addressed the issue at the time of writing this. Until they do, you can just turn the auto-save off to avoid the trouble of deleting duplicates.

  • Open WhatsApp on your iPhone and select Settings
  • Tap Chats
  • Toggle off Save to Camera Roll

If you want to turn it on after the bug is fixed, just follow the above steps and toggle ‘on’ instead.
