Report: Rangers ready to sell £3m signing at huge loss despite 'fantastic' impressive form

Rangers are reportedly ready to make a ’huge loss’ on one £3 million signing as Philippe Clement’s side look to raise funds for a couple of summer additions.

While eyebrows may be raised at the prospect of cashing in on a man who has performed so impressively out on loan in recent weeks, the early deals done by the Philippe Clement – Nils Koppen partnership should earn those Ibrox decision-makers the benefit of the doubt.

Rangers, thanks to a handful of very impressive January calls, appear to have a far stronger squad now than they did at the end of December. It’s doubtful that you can say the same about their Old Firm neighbours and title rivals Celtic.

Oscar Cortes was an excellent replacement for Abdallah Sima before joining the Brighton loanee in the treatment room. Fabio Silva has more than made his mark on loan from Wolves. Mohamed Diomande, meanwhile, appears to be a big upgrade on the underwhelming Jose Cifuentes.

So with reporter Peter O’Rourke claiming that Rangers are likely to cash in on Sam Lammers in a move that could raise funds for new additions, Clement and Koppen have more than enough credit in the bank already to raise hopes of any replacement being an improvement on the £3 million summer signing from Atalanta.

Lammers netted only three goals or assists in 17 Scottish Premiership appearances under Clement and his Ibrox predecessor Mick Beale. Despite managing double that in just 10 Eredivisie outings on loan at FC Utrecht – Lammers scored a brilliant winner against NEC Nijmegen on Sunday – O’Rourke claims to have been informed by sources close to Rangers that the club are ‘preparing to take a huge loss’.

How much will the forward leave Ibrox for?

The report does not explain exactly how much of a loss Rangers are ready to take.

The irony, of course, is that Lammers – on his current and‘fantastic’ Utrecht form – looks like a player well worth a £3 million punt. You cannot say the same of his displays pre-Ibrox, Lammers netting only six goals in 75 games during dismal spells at Atalanta, Frankfurt, Sampdoria and Empoli after leaving PSV in 20200.

There is, however, still a chance that Lammers can raise his value between now and the end of May. A few more goals like the one against NEC on Sunday, and Rangers should be able to recoup a little bit more of that ill-fated £3 million investment.
