Three players Sheffield Wednesday should pounce on if they get relegated, including 'outstanding' star - opinion

Here are three players who could potentially be relegated this season that Sheffield Wednesday should snap up.

When Sheffield Wednesday were relegated in 2021, they were forced to offload a number of their players, with the likes of Adam Reach, Tom Lees and Jordan Rhodes all staying in the Championship.

It is a regular occurrence that star players will be snapped up by the vultures circling after a club drops down a league, and no doubt that will happen again in a few months time.

The Owls will be hoping it is not them that faces even more departures than are already expected, but if they do manage to stay up, then they could also turn to the bottom three and try and lure some of their players to Hillsborough.

Here are three players who may be relegated this season and should be targets for Sheffield Wednesday.

Michal Helik (Huddersfield Town)

Michal Helik has spent the past four years in Yorkshire, having previously played for Barnsley before joining Huddersfield in 2022.

The 28-year-old has made 32 starts for the Terriers and has been key to them both in defence and up front.

Helik has racked up an impressive nine goals in the Championship this term, with his goals proving to be the difference in points against Leeds, Blaackburn, Sunderland and Coventry.

The 6ft 2 centre-back is a mountain in the box and has proven extremely handy from set pieces, which could be useful for Sheffield Wednesday given their disappointment in that area.

Helik has also made the third-most clearances in the Championship (175) and blocked the fifth-most shots (38).

The defender’s brilliant season could well have attracted interest from clubs further up the league table though, so it could be an ambitious move for the Owls.

Juninho Bacuna (Birmingham City)

Probably even more ambitious is Juninho Bacuna.

The ‘outstanding’ midfielder has been a key player for Birmingham City this season, netting six goals and providing six assists so far.

While Bacuna has made it clear he wishes to play in central midfield, his versatility has come in very handy, with the Curacao international playing on either side of midfield, right-back, defensive midfield and attacking midfield this term.

The 26-year-old would undoubtedly be on his way out of St Andrews if they were relegated, but he could end up with much more attractive offers than Sheffield Wednesday.

Bacuna was the subject of a £4.2 million bid from Fenerbahce in January, and the Owls certainly couldn’t compete with that. However, he would be entering the final 12 months of his deal and, if he is desperate to leave, the Terriers could be forced to let him leave on the cheap.

Sorba Thomas (Huddersfield Town)

Another Huddersfield player is Sorba Thomas, who has spent over three years in Yorkshire.

The winger is on course for his best campaign in the Championship in his career – netting four goals and providing nine assists so far.

Thomas can play across the front three and could be a very solid signing for Sheffield Wednesday, while he could potentially be open to taking a short trip up the M1.
