Report: What Richard Hughes will immediately be doing after Liverpool appointment

Following today’s appointment of Richard Hughes as Liverpool’s new sporting director, football’s worst kept secret has now been confirmed.

Hughes will take his position at the end of this season and the appointment marks the first key arrival since Michael Edwards become CEO of Football.

The pair do enjoy a long friendship, going back to their days working together in the early 2000s at Portsmouth.

And Liverpool do now look to be creating an exciting platform for success beyond the Jurgen Klopp era.

Although both of the moves mentioned above represent big change, the club’s new manager will be by far in a way the most significant.

Klopp has been in charge for 477 matches at Liverpool, and his successor will certainly have big shoes to fill.

That being said, The Telegraph have now shared a report detailing what Richard Hughes’ first task will be as Liverpool’s new sporting director.

And although Hughes doesn’t officially start his new post until June, he will immediately be integral in the process of appointing the club’s next manager.

The report still lists Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi and Sporting’s Ruben Amorim as the most prominent candidates, three names that probably wouldn’t displease Liverpool fans, perhaps even in that order.

And the information also states that Liverpool have already begun extensive background checks on their prime targets.

Hughes will then immediately be tasked to zone in on the preferred candidate, given he will have a day to day working relationship with Klopp’s replacement.

Xabi Alonso surely still remains the most appealing candidate from a Liverpool point of view, even if he may be the hardest to appoint.

It still feels as if Bayern Munich will have a considerable bearing on the managerial merry-go-round this summer, given their need to replace Thomas Tuchel.

But the future certainly looks bright at Anfield, even if Klopp’s departure will still be hard to swallow.

And if Richard Hughes is starting his work early as Liverpool’s new sporting director, it seems as if the club’s recruitment department never stopped.

As well as reports of interest in PSV Eindhoven’s Johan Bakayoko, it seems Liverpool may still be in the running for an exciting young Bundesliga striker.
