Report: Sheffield Wednesday's relegation chances compared to rivals now emerges after Ipswich defeat

The likelihood of Sheffield Wednesday getting relegated this season has now emerged.

Sheffield Wednesday have spent practically the entire campaign in the relegation zone, despite winning over 40% of their games since Danny Rohl took charge in October.

However, with only eight games to go, the Owls will be feeling confident that they can finally climb out of the bottom three and rescue their Championship status for a further year.

Rohl’s side have now won five of their last eight games and are facing teams with the second-lowest average PPG in the league – with matches against the likes of QPR and Blackburn proving crucial to their battle.

It’s extremely hard to predict how Sheffield Wednesday‘s final eight games will pan out and it almost feels like they have a 50/50 chance of staying up – and that’s because they do.

Opta have now revealed how likely each relegation candidate is to be relegated this season, with Rotherham United currently sitting at 100%.

Next up is the Owls, who sit on 53.3%, while third bottom is Birmingham City (40.5%).

While Opta have claimed Sheffield Wednesday are the second-most likely to drop down to the Championship, their percentage still isn’t particularly high.

It suggests it is really just up to the players which side of the coin they end up on.

What do Sheffield Wednesday need to do to avoid the drop?

While Rohl’s side have lost their last two games, they had been in excellent form prior to that, and if they can keep up that form than there is no reason why they can’t claim the points needed to escape the drop zone.

If we assume Rotherham are down, then you have to start looking at the fixtures coming up for Blackburn. Rovers haven’t won any of their last five games and still have matches against Ipswich, Southampton, Leeds and Leicester coming up.

Sheffield Wednesday have one of the ‘easiest’ runs, and if they can keep on playing like they have been then they should be on track to saving their league status.

Games against Swansea, QPR and Stoke should be guaranteed points for the Yorkshire outfit, while their confidence could see them also scrape results against the likes of West Brom and Sunderland.

There is no chance that Rohl is going to let his team give up without a fight, so the only way they are going down is if every team around them starts dramatically turning things around.
