Report: Club are now growing concerned Forest won't sign 26-year-old permanently after Nuno's arrival

Nottingham Forest defender Gonzalo Montiel hasn’t played in the Premier League for Forest since February. He’s been injured and now Sevilla are getting somewhat anxious.

Forest plucked Montiel from the La Liga outfit on loan during the summer transfer window. The World Cup winner has so far made just 14 appearances since signing for the club and has claimed three assists.

This week, the Reds were deducted four points for breaching financial fair play. Now, it’s no secret thatForest will have to cut their cloth accordingly in the transfer market this summer.

Sevilla concerned Forest won’t be signing Gonzalo Montiel

Well, this boils down to the clause that Forest have in their loan arrangement to purchase Montiel permanently. If the Argentine reaches so many Premier League appearances, the Reds owe Sevilla £9 million.

According to Vamos Mi Sevilla, Victor Orta is now worried that Forest won’t be able to sign Montiel during the summer given that the club have been deducted points and will need to possibly sell a player.

The 26-year-old hasn’t done bad when called upon. He was brilliant in wins against Newcastle and Manchester United over Christmas and managed to keep Neco Williams out of the team.

He’s not played in the Premier League since February and picked up an injury in the FA Cup replay against Bristol City. Now, it remains to be seen if he will play for Forest again.

Forest surely won’t sign defender now

With Forest now under pressure to make sure they reach the PSR threshold next season, it feels highly unlikely that Montiel will be signed on a permanent basis.

Although the player has done a decent job under Nuno Espirito Santo, clearly this latest injury has set him back.

Indeed, the mandatory requirement in terms of the number of games looks unlikely to be met – not least because Neco Williams has made the right-back position his own.

Spending money will only be likely in the summer if the Reds can sell players first. As a result, forking out £9 million for another right back – one who hasn’t played much for the club – looks an unlikely scenario for Forest.
