Netflix adds thought-provoking drama about school teacher who is hit by 'cancel culture'

Netflix is all about variety. Today, they have released 3-Body Problem, a high-concept American sci-fi series from Game Of Thrones creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. It’s sure to shoot up the streamer’s ‘Top 10’ this weekend. On the other hand, they have also released the obscure 2023 movie Andragogy, which played at the Toronto International Film Festival. Netflix is doing a great service, because the film may not have had the chance to be discovered by a wide audience otherwise, and given the timely subject matter it’s an essential watch.

What is Andragogy about?

Andragogy is a 2023 Indonesian drama movie about a school teacher and guidance counselor who is filmed having a very public outburst when somebody cuts in line in front of her.

“The video of you yelling has been viewed more than 100,000 in just seven hours,” she’s told, watching the viral clip of herself on a phone. Viewers take the clip out of context and believe she’s yelling at a seller rather than the man who cut in line.

Parodied and inspiring countless memes, the footage takes on a life of its own, and an enraged public demands she resign from her job.

Added to Netflix on Thursday, March 21st 2024, the movie serves as an exploration of the life-changing negative effects of social media and the cancel culture that it has spawned in more recent years. It offers scathing social commentary, and if there’s any film that demands discussion and debate after watching, here it is.

It’s a movie very much of the here and now—relevant and troubling.

Is Andragogy in English on Netflix?

Andragogy is in Indonesian but there are English subtitles available.

Usually, Netflix makes an English dub available for its original content. However, as this isn’t a Netflix production and also not a major movie but rather an indie, there is only the original Indonesian audio available.

There are a handful of subtitle options, so it’s easily accessible if you don’t mind reading while you watch, and arguably many of the best movies over the years encourage that you should.

Although watching subtitled movies isn’t for everyone, some movies deserve to become an exception to the rule, and if there’s any new addition to Netflix this week that demands your attention, it’s this one.

Andragogy is now streaming on Netflix.
