Swedish media share verdict on Dejan Kulusevski's display for Sweden v Portugal last night

Tottenham winger Dejan Kulusevski was among the Spurs players involved in international games last night.

Like Brennan Johnson with Wales, Kulusevksi got his international break underway earlier than some of the others in the Premier League.

Kulusevski’s Sweden took on a Portugal team without Cristiano Ronaldo involved. The legendary striker is taking some time with his family, but it mattered little in terms of the result.

Dejan Kulusevski part of Sweden hammering in Portugal

Portugal hammered Kulusevski’s Sweden, 5-2. Indeed, it was 4-0 until Viktor Gyokeres scored, then 5-1 before Kulusevski got himself an assist in the 90th minute, setting up Gustaf Nilsson.

And looking at how the Swedish media outlet FotbollSkanalen reacted to the Tottenham man’s performance, it seems he could have done more.

“Worked on but without getting much out. The right-hander was fairly close to a 3-1 deficit at the start of the second half. And provided a nice assist for the 5-2 goal. But it is possible to demand more from a player who is to be a key piece. Weak second,” they wrote.

Kulusevski has not quite the heights he did with Spurs last season. He’s hit just the six goals and Jermaine Beckford even recently suggested he was struggling without Harry Kane around.

Kulusevski can do much better

We all saw last season how good Dejan Kulusevski can be. But as mentioned here, something seems to be missing this season and that’s carried into his international performance too.

Of course, Portugal are simply a stronger outfit than Sweden at the moment. So on that front, it’s not all down to Kulusevski to bail his team out.

But he is one of their more key players and the Swedish media are right to ask for a touch more here.

For Tottenham, they will just want the winger back fit for next weekend. But Sweden will see Kulusevski as being essential to their hopes for the future.

The winger, then, needs to produce more it seems and really take games by the scruff of the neck.
