Takumi Minamino has been ranking some of the greatest south-east Asian players of all-time.
Countries such as South Korea and Japan have provided us with some truly world-class footballers over the past 20 or so years after the footballing boom in the wake of the 2002 World Cup.
The likes of Keisuke Honda, Shinji Kagawa and Kaoru Mitoma have all been absolute joys to watch over the years, but perhaps the best of the bunch has been Heung-Min Son.
The Tottenham attacker has genuinely been one of the best players in the Premier League over the past decade or so, and speaking to Goal on TikTok, Minamino has ranked Son at the top of his list ahead of the likes of Wataru Endo and Ji-Sung Park.
Usually in lists like this there is plenty of room for debate, but you’ll be hard pressed to find even the most ardent Liverpool fan who believes Endo is better than Son.
That’s not to say that Endo isn’t a fantastic player, but he doesn’t have the same level of talent as the £22m Tottenham man.
Son is a Golden Boot winner who has been one of the best players in a team that has consistently played Champions League football over the past few years, while Endo is only just getting his big break at Liverpool now, but, in fairness, the midfielder is thriving.
When all is said and done, Son may well be his country and his region’s greatest ever player, and his rise to prominence alongside the likes of Endo and Minamino just goes to show how much football in that part of the world has grown since that World Cup 22 years ago.
Say what you will about FIFA’s choice of host nations for the world’s biggest tournament, the 2002 edition seemingly had a great effect and brought about a golden age of south-east Asian football.
