Why recent Sheffield Wednesday club announcement speaks volumes about the fans - opinion

A recent club announcement speaks volumes about Sheffield Wednesday fans, and here’s why.

For Sheffield Wednesday, this current 2023/24 season may be a very memorable one. But whether that’s for good or bad reasons hasn’t been decided yet.

Things obviously started very badly; Sheffield Wednesday parted ways with Darren Moore and owner Dejphon Chansiri went about a very public tirade.

Aside from hiring Xisco Munoz, who proved to be statistically the worst manager in Sheffield Wednesday’s history, Chansiri proved himself to be one of the worst owners in the Football League.

He berated Wednesday supporters with a number of club statements and since, fans have formed The 1867 Group which aims at ousting Chansiri from the club.

But Danny Rohl has brought the feel-good factor back to Hillsborough, and despite being down and out after the opening few months of the season, the Owls are now just a point from safety with eight games left.

Sheffield Wednesday make club announcement

There’s no football this weekend with teams breaking for international fixtures.

But supporters are already counting down the days until league football resumes and there’s a real crunch match just around the corner for Wednesday.

The Owls head down to QPR for a Championship six-pointer on April 6th, and on Friday the club announced that away tickets for the game in West London have already sold out.

Sheffield Wednesday allocation for QPR

Sheffield Wednesday tickets for the game at Loftus Road only went on sale earlier this week.

And although they’ve already sold out, Sheffield Wednesday appear to have been given a smaller allocation for QPR than usual.

Wednesday were handed just 1,800 tickets for the game whereas Middlesbrough were given close to 3,000 tickets for their game at QPR earlier this month.

Another sell-out speaks volumes about Wednesday fans

Disregarding the smaller allocation, another sell-out on the road, despite all that’s gone down at Sheffield Wednesday on and off the pitch this season, proves that the Owls have some of the best fans in the division.

Chansiri has seemingly done his best to frustrate the fans this year but that only seems to make them more passionate about their club.

And now the Owls have eight more cup finals to salvage their Championship status.

Relegation would surely kick-start another woeful summer; it would surely mean Rohl leaving along with several key players, and few would trust Chansiri to make another strong appointment like with Rohl, or to put together a decent summer transfer window.

But one thing Sheffield Wednesday will always have is a loyal and growing fanbase.

The Owls return to action at home vs Swansea City next weekend.
