Report: Nottingham Forest now keen to sign £21,000-a-week midfielder on free transfer

Nottingham Forest are now keen to secure a free transfer this summer as Evangelos Marinakis looks to cut down on spending – after the breach of financial rules.

It was A Bola in Portugal who provided the information.

So, who do Nottingham Forest want to sign on a free transfer this summer? Let’s take a look…

Nottingham Forest want Leandro Barreiro on free transfer

Well – according to A Bola – Nottingham Forest are keen to sign Leandro Barreiro on a free transfer when his contract with Mainz 05 expires in July.

The 52-cap Luxembourg international is a popular figure within the Bundesliga outfit, with Director of Football Martin Schmidt admitting that he will do everything “humanly possible” to renew his No.8’s contract.

However, the Portuguese news outlet believe Barreiro has already decided to run down his contract and try a new adventure.

A Bola add that Benfica moved quickly and find themselves in pole position to sign the man from Erpeldingen – it is even said that the Primeira Liga outfit have agreed a deal.

Nevertheless, A Bola mention that neither side have confirmed this detail yet, so Nottingham Forest still have every chance to sign the £21,000-a-week man this summer.

Barreiro has made 23 appearances in the Bundesliga for Mainz 05 this season, scoring two goals from central midfield.

Difficult to plan

Signing an experienced international like Barreiro on a free transfer would be excellent business by Nottingham Forest – although it is very hard to plan ahead in the current circumstances.

Those at the City Ground have no idea what league Nottingham Forest will be playing in next season after the recent points deduction, and even an appeal against that verdict could delay an outcome until after the end of the season.

Therefore, making recruitment plans will be very difficult for Ross Wilson – it will be especially difficult to convince Barreiro to join, given the uncertainty.

Nevertheless, be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as anything could happen.
