Two goals, 97 touches, five ground duels won: 20-year-old Liverpool gem is truly on fire for his nation

Liverpool star Harvey Elliott is getting better and better for the Reds, and surely it won’t be long before he’s in the same boat for England.

The 20-year-old Liverpool forward has become an important member of Jurgen Klopp‘s Reds squad, with 41 outings for the Anfield side this season.

Bafflingly, Elliott is still awaiting his senior England debut, but he is absolutely shining for the Under-21s. He is now on 10 goals from 19 caps for the team.

On Friday, the Liverpool prodigy bagged a brace as England’s U21s ran out 5-1 winners over Azerbaijan’s U21s in Baku.

How did Liverpool star Harvey Elliott fare for England U21s in Azerbaijan?

Elliott broke the deadlock in the 25th minute, bundling home at the far post from a Tyler Morton cross, the two Liverpool gems connecting for the opener.

Chelsea’s Noni Madueke then got on the scoresheet four minutes later for a 2-0 half-time lead following Jaden Philogene cross from the byline.

Hull City’s Philogene then added a third for England early on in the second half, before Elliott got his second on 67 minutes.

The Reds ace was on hand to fire home after good work from Morgan Rogers, who held off his marker and turned deftly to fashion a cross for his compatriot.

Though Ramin Nasirli pulled a goal back for the hosts on 86 minutes, Leeds teenager Archie Gray scored on his England U21s debut to round off the scoring.

Alongside his brace, Elliott clocked up some impressive stats on the day.

As per Sofascore, he took 97 touches, completed 65 passes, saw another shot blocked, won five ground duels and chipped in with an interception.

Surely it’s only a matter of time before Elliott gets a call-up for the England senior setup. Well, here’s hoping anyway.

Obviously it would be a huge surprise to see Elliott make the cut for Euro 2024, but if all goes well, it would be great to see him in the fold for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
