International manager says Liverpool have a top 20-year-old with the 'ability to score all kinds of goals'

Liverpool attacking talent Harvey Elliott continues to go from strength to strength this season.

The 20-year-old Liverpool forward is now an important member of Jurgen Klopp‘s squad, with 41 appearances for the Reds this season.

In addition, Elliott has been proving his worth for England’s Under-21s, doing so well that some are asking why he’s not in the senior setup.

On Friday, the Anfield talent scored a brace to help the Young Lions run out 5-1 winners against Azerbaijan’s Under-21s in Baku.

Elliott broke the deadlock in the 25th minute, bundling home at the far post after connecting with a Tyler Morton cross.

Chelsea’s Noni Madueke then got on the scoresheet four minutes later following a Jaden Philogene cross from the by-line.

Philogene then helped himself to a goal not long after the restart before Elliott struck again in the 67th minute following good work from Morgan Rogers.

Though Azerbaijan’s Ramin Nasirli pulled one back on 86 minutes, Leeds United teenager Archie Gray rounded off the scoring with a goal on his England U21s debut.

What has England U21s boss Lee Carsley said about Liverpool star Harvey Elliott?

With regards to Elliott’s international future, Young Lions boss Lee Carsley is confident that a senior call-up is on the horizon for the Liverpool ace.

‘The way he’s been playing every week for Liverpool, and the impact he’s made, means he’s putting himself in a great position,’ the Daily Mail quotes Carsley as saying.

‘It was a really strong end to the season in a really strong team. He is connected to this team but there is never any temptation from me to keep them here.

He’s got the ability to score all kinds of goals. If he can keep adding those, it’s a big thing and the senior team really value people who can put the numbers together.’

Although it’s a shame Elliott didn’t get a call-up this time round – and the likelihood of spot in the Euro 2024 squad is now low – there’s no doubt he’ll get there eventually.

England have friendlies against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland before the tournament starts, so maybe he’ll get a look-in then.

Then again, Southgate may want to fine-tune preparations using the same players he’ll plan to utilise in Germany.

In that case, we’d be looking at the UEFA Nations League, which gets under way in September.
