Report: Sheffield Wednesday have taken 'powerful' teenager on trial, he played v QPR on Friday

Sheffield Wednesday handed a debut to a ‘powerful’ young attacker earlier this week.

Danny Rohl has, for the most part, stuck with a rather experienced starting eleven as he has looked to avoid relegation this season.

Bailey Cadamarteri was handed his big break after emerging from the academy, but has since found his place on the bench during a nitty gritty end to the campaign.

James Beadle is also another of the young sparks in the side, though he comes from a club stacked with exciting youngsters in Brighton & Hove Albion.

The rest of them have come with plenty of promotions and relegation battles under their belt, and staying up with that team has been the main focus at Middlewood Road for months now.

But that doesn’t mean they aren’t working hard away in the academy – looking to boost their talent and bring in players to make their mark in the first team over the next few years.

While the likes of Sam Reed and Rio Shipston have caught the eye of the Owls, the U21s now look as if they could potentially bring another teenager on board to strengthen their youth system.

As per The Star, young attacker Torin Ntege was named in the match-day squad as Sheffield Wednesday faced QPR on Friday morning.

The youngster was named on the bench during the 3-1 win and was brought on in the second half to make his debut.

Ntege currently plies his trade with Peterborough United after joining the club from Hitchin Town in 2022, having become a regular for their Under-21s and also being named on the bench for the first team.

The ‘powerful’ striker spent a brief period on loan at St Ives Town FC earlier this year, but could now be set for a permanent move up north as he looks to land a deal at Hillsborough.

Ntege will now have to wait till April to earn himself another chance to impress, while it is unclear how long his trial period is with Sheffield Wednesday.

Ntege was also joined by Watford’s James Collins on trial against QPR, having joined the Hornets from Hertford Town in January 2023.

When should Sheffield Wednesday start looking to their academy?

Sheffield Wednesday have plenty of talent in their academy and appear to be on the verge of having their chance in the first team at various stages of the campaign, but it is certainly not the time to be promoting anyone now.

Bailey Cadamarteri made a brilliant first impression on the Owls, but he certainly couldn’t be expected to lead the line in such a big season for the club, while Danny Rohl knows he can rely on the more experienced players who have probably endured similar situations before.

If Rohl stays at Hillsborough next term and builds a much better foundation, then we could see him begin to bring some of the more promising youngsters up into the first team picture – but that is surely not something under consideration at this point.
