'Haven't had': What Celtic’s Mikey Johnston has taken to West Brom that they’ve never experienced before

Mikey Johnston really is one of those enigmatic players the Celtic fans just can’t seem to get their heads around.

Blessed with all the skill in the world, the Republic of Ireland international just can’t seem to nail down a place in the Celtic team despite having undoubted ability on the ball.

His loan spell at Vitoria Guimaraes last season proved that he can deliver big performances when needed as he helped them reach the European spots in the Portuguese league.

And now on loan at West Brom, the Celtic winger is grabbing all the headlines as he sparkles for the English Championship club and pushes their bid to win promotion to the Premier League.

Johnston’s teammate, Conor Townsend, has been blown away with the Celtic winger and shares the one thing that he’s brought to the West Midlands club that he’s never seen there before.

Townsend said [The Sunday Post print edition page 75], “Mikey Johnston has obviously come in and scored a few goals, he’s been the standout and won us a few games.

“Everyone has always spoken about how talented he is, but he’s come in and really made his mark, so long may it continue.

“He’s been a great signing for us, as have the other lads we signed in the January transfer window.

“Hopefully, Mikey can keep his run going and keep himself fit.

“We haven’t had anybody who’s scored loads of goals, but since he’s come in he seems to score in most games and they’re not exactly tap-ins either, they’ve been worldies.”

Johnston has scored six goals in ten appearances for West Brom this season and has also created one assist.

This is ironic because over the course of his Celtic career, Johnston has only found the back of the net 13 times in 92 appearances. [Transfermarkt]

The 24-year-old is enjoying a new lease of life down south and has been tipped to make his temporary move permanent.

It has been suggested that a fee of around £3m might be enough to tempt Celtic to sell but if Johnston continues his impressive form then that figure could easily increase especially if his goals take West Brom to the EPL.
