Rarely-seen Nottingham Forest gem stars for national team and Nuno must give him a chance - opinion

Nottingham Forest are desperately trying to remain in the Premier League this season. With that in mind, one player is busy showcasing that he deserves a chance to showcase his quality.

The Reds were deducted four points last week. Following their failure to meet the threshold for their losses, Forest were found guilty and have subsequently dropped into the relegation zone.

In January,Forest tried to bolster their ranks once again – whilst maintaining a common sense approach in terms of finances, with financial fair play hanging over them.

Gio Reyna signed for Forest from Dortmund on loan, Matz Sels was signed between the posts and Rodrigo Ribeiro was a surprise signing from Sporting Lisbon.

Rodrigo Ribeiro stars on international duty

In fairness, Ribeiro has struggled to impose himself on the Forest team since arriving from Portugal. He’s managed just two minutes of action and is still craving a proper chance.

Despite a lack of game time, Ribeiro was still called up by Portugal for their under-19 European Championship qualifiers – and he’s not disappointed either.

The 18-year-old talent plays as a striker and last night he scored and claimed two assists as Portugal made it two wins in three days with a 4-1 win over Serbia.

On Wednesday, Portugal defeated Greece 2-1. In that clash, Forest star Ribeiro scored and his record for the under-19s stands at seven goals in 16 appearances.

Forest are yet to see the best of Ribeiro. However, his form in the recent games for the under-19s suggests that he could be ready when Nuno Espirito Santo gives him the nod.

Ribeiro proving he can step up when Forest need him

With Taiwo Awoniyi nursing another injury problem, Forest are down to the bare bones when it comes to strikers.

Reports claimed that Chris Wood should be good for Saturday against Crystal Palace but at 32-years-old, his schedule needs to be managed carefully.

That is where Ribeiro could come into the fray at Forest. It’s not hard to understand that Espirito Santo might want experienced players given the situation but Ribeiro shouldn’t be discounted.

As a teenager, the Portuguese performer will have a fearless approach. Wood might be the top goalscorer but given his advancing years, it’s hard to imagine him playing every game.

Riberio has been strong in under-19 football to date. Now, he’s showcasing the type of finishing skills that could give Espirito Santo some food for thought and earn him a Forest chance.
