‘I’d be very surprised’: Journalist would be shocked if ‘special’ Arsenal target doesn’t leave this summer

Mikel Arteta looks set to bolster his options in midfield this summer as Arsenal continue to build an exciting side.

The Gunners could be preparing for the departure of Thomas Partey, with the midfielder managing just six Premier League appearances this season due to injuries.

As a result, Arsenal continue to be linked with midfield targets, including the likes of Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz and Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.

But a fresh name has emerged over the weekend as Arsenal are said to be monitoring Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White.

Indeed, it has been claimed that should Emile Smith Rowe depart, Arsenal could look to move for Gibbs-White.

And Charles Watts expects to see the Forest star on the move this summer.

Gibbs-White expected to leave Forest this summer

Speaking in his latest YouTube video, Watts was asked about Arsenal’s reported interest in Gibbs-White.

The journalist admitted he was unsure whether or not the Gunners would look at the Englishman this summer. But he would be surprised to see Gibbs-White remain at the City Ground beyond the upcoming transfer window.

“I think we will see players having to move, yes, 100 per cent. Bigger clubs will take advantage of what’s going on with PSR (profit and sustainability rules) at the moment and come down to sign some of these players.

“I think Morgan Gibbs-White will probably be one of them. I’d be very surprised if he’s still at Nottingham Forest next season.”

Watts did add that he would prefer to see the club keep hold of Hale End Academy product Smith Rowe.

Arsenal to move for Gibbs-White?

Gibbs-White isn’t short of potential suitors ahead of the summer as Forest look set to cash in on some of their key players.

Of course, the Midlands club have recently been docked four points after breaching the Premier League’s PSR.

A move for the ‘special’ midfielder could make a lot of sense from Arsenal’s point of view as they search for midfield reinforcements.

Gibbs-White has excelled at Forest since swapping Wolves for the City Ground in the summer of 2022. He would certainly add athleticism and extra creativity to Arteta’s midfield.

But whether or not Arsenal will prioritise a deeper-lying midfielder remains to be seen. With Declan Rice excelling in a more advanced role of late, they may yet look for a different profile to Gibbs-White.
