Office romance could be the secret to boosting your performance at work

You can find love in the oddest ways and your workplace could be one of them. Not only is office romance more common than you would imagine but it is also said to impact people’s performance positively.

A recent study conducted by Resume Builder showed that most of the respondents were romantically involved with fellow employees or a superior on returning to the office after working via a virtual setup for a while.

Romantic relationships can impact your work positively

1,448 workers who fell under the RTO (Return To Office) policy were surveyed as a part of the study to understand their romantic behaviors at the workplace.

It was determined that about 29% of people who returned to the office got involved in a romantic relationship. However, only 58% who were dating disclosed their relationship to HR.

The most interesting aspect of the study was the way these relationships influenced their work and it was surprisingly positive.

Two-thirds of respondents, that’s about 66% of them in a romantic relationship said that their association with their coworker had a positive impact on their work, while 6% say it has or had a negative impact, and 28% say no impact, claims the study.

The respondents noted that office romance made it more exciting to go to work, it improved their mental health, and even helped them get raises or promotions.

Perks of dating someone at work

Resume and Career Strategist Julia Toothacre listed a couple of factors that made work exciting while being in love with a co-worker or anybody else working in the same professional space.

You look forward to going to work to see your significant other and wouldn’t be cutting down on working hours to step out early to see them if they worked elsewhere.

“Dating someone you work with, especially in the early stages, can be thrilling. Based on these results, you can see that it improves the person’s work experience because they have something to look forward to during the day,” Julia explained.

However, the same can work to someone’s disadvantage if the relationship ends badly as it can have a negative impact on their performance.

The parties involved may also want to find different jobs to avoid seeing each other after calling it quits, which isn’t beneficial to the company they are working with.

“A lot of this depends on how large the organization is and how close you are to the person you’re dating,” the strategist added.
