Player Nottingham Forest sold in January now picks up serious injury on debut for new club

Nottingham Forest sold Richie Laryea in January to end his nightmare move to the City Ground from Toronto FC. The player rejoined his former club on a permanent deal after a couple of loans back in the MLS.

Laryea was a Steve Cooper signing at Forest. He joined the club in January 2022 and served as a backup option for promotion-winning right-back Djed Spence.

The 29-year-old only made five appearances for Forest during his time at the club. Just one of those came in the starting eleven and that was on the final day as the Reds played a dead rubber against Hull before the play-offs got underway.

Laryea spent time with the Vancouver Whitecaps on loan from Forest last season. There he made 14 appearances and claimed four goal contributions – although they chose not to sign him permanently.

It was left to Toronto FC to welcome back the fan favourite on a permanent basis. The player’s European adventure didn’t quite go as planned and now, disaster has struck in the MLS.

Richie Laryea picks up injury in debut for Toronto FC

Well, it never rains it pours for poor old Laryea. No sooner had he returned to the club he holds close to his heart, he’s gone and picked up a serious injury on his debut.

During a 0-0 draw with Cincinnati, Laryea limped out of the action and it’s now been confirmed by the official website of the MLS that the defender is out for a minimum of three months.

Laryea, who left Forest in January, has torn his hamstring and it’s not the first time that he’s done that kind of injury making this one especially frustrating for the player.

The experienced performer has made 113 appearances for Toronto in total. He earned the move to Forest on the back of some fine form – with American, Dane Murphy choosing to sign him when he was at the club.

Forest were right to offload Laryea in January

The man with 48 caps for Canada is another player who can be filed under ‘Doesn’t make sense’ from a Forest perspective.

His transfer didn’t come with a deal of logic given that he’d never played in Europe and played in the same position as a top Reds performer in the promotion-winning campaign.

Once Forest got promoted, the writing was on the wall for the international. Bizarrely, Laryea was actually named in the 25-man squad shortly before he departed and was training with the first team under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Game time was never likely to be forthcoming in the Premier League, however. With that in mind, it’s proved great business that Forest managed to get a small fee for his services in the mid-season transfer window.

It’s never nice to see players pick up injuries, however. As a result, the hope will be that Laryea can recover quickly and start to play regularly once again following his Forest debacle.
