Report: Chelsea are now actively trying to sell £50k-a-week Newcastle United target, Eddie Howe is a fan

Newcastle United are going to be in the market for a midfielder this summer, and their search could lead them to Chelsea.

After failing to sign a midfielder during the January transfer window due to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, the Magpies are set to try again at the end of the season.

It is clear that Eddie Howe needs a fresh option in there, while he will be all the more desperate if Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton leave the club this summer. The former could be sold to ease Newcastle’s PSR concerns, while the latter may depart too if he does not sign a new contract at St James’ Park soon.

Toon fans will believe that Atalanta star Ederson is the most likely to join. Scouts have watched him a lot this season, and it has been claimed that Newcastle are leading the race to sign the Brazilian.

But if Newcastle decide to look closer to home, they might find that Chelsea are very interested in selling a player who the Magpies have targeted for a long time.

Chelsea want to sell Conor Gallagher this summer

According to the Daily Mail, Premier League rivals believe that Chelsea are ‘actively’ trying to sell Conor Gallagher this summer.

That is because of profit and sustainability, with a deal for Gallagher representing ‘pure profit’ after he came through the Chelsea academy. He could therefore be sold by Mauricio Pochettino’s side, who also have to consider Gallagher’s contract situation.

Like Joelinton, Gallagher’s current contract runs until 2025. He is about to enter the final 12 months of his £50,000-a-week deal, so this summer is the time to either hand him a new contract or cash in. And given their PSR situation, the latter appears to be more likely.

That could be good news for Newcastle, who are reportedly big fans of the 24-year-old heading into the summer.

That is no surprise, as Gallagher has been linked with the Magpies a lot. He was denied a move to Tyneside last year, while Eddie Howe is a keen admirer of the midfielder.

Newcastle owners saw firsthand that signing Gallagher would be a mistake

However, it remains to be seen if the Newcastle owners feel the same after watching him on Saturday night.

Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi were at Wembley, watching Newcastle United stars Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon go head-to-head as Brazil beat England 1-0.

They will also have seen Gallagher feature, with Gareth Southgate naming him in his midfield three alongside Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice.

Gallagher stuck out like a sore thumb, but not in a good way. His lack of quality on the ball at the elite level was clear, and that should given Newcastle enough reason to look elsewhere as they aim to sign a midfielder this summer.
