‘I had to stop’… Tottenham star reveals new hidden injury he has played through

Tottenham injury concerns in recent weeks may be worse than they first appeared, with one star playing through a broken foot bone.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has been battling with a growing injury list throughout the campaign so far. The head coach’s intense style of play, mixed with some bad fortune, has seen a fair few absences.

With key losses to Micky van de Ven and James Maddison over large periods, it’s been a time for pragmatism with the lineup. Those injury concerns appeared to ease up slightly, before biting back as of late.

Even more so with one star revealing on international duty that he has actually been playing through a broken foot bone.

While on international duty with Uruguay, Rodrigo Bentancur has been discussing a hidden injury that he’s been playing through. Speaking in the mixed zone, via ESPN, he said: “I broke it two or three weeks ago, but I’m still playing the same. I broke my phalanx [little toe].

“I had to stop for three or four weeks to weld it, and it was impossible. It was before the game against Crystal Palace in training, but here I go, recovering. Once I warm up, I forget.”

It comes as a slightly shocking revelation, given very little indication that there was an injury issue and Bentancur played all three games since that problem.

Rodrigo Bentancur injury history

According to Transfermarkt, Betancur has missed 341 days of action through injury since joining Tottenham. Most of that was through an Anterior Cruciate Ligament issue he picked up in February 2023, which kept him out until later that year.

The recovery time of the midfielder has been remarkable, not only through the knee problem, but also the ankle injury he picked up against Aston Villa. The 26-year-old was expected to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines, but recovered within a month to take the field yet again.

Another injury, this time with a broken toe, displays the brave mentality of Bentancur to continue battling back from setbacks to play.
