Report: Richard Hughes is a massive fan of 44-year-old PL manager and would like him at Liverpool

Liverpool’s quest for a new manager seems to be picking up pace now Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards are in place.

FSG got their men by landing Edwards and then Hughes. The pair are now tasked with getting the next manager to Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp heads off in the summer.

Different names are getting mentioned every week. Xabi Alonso appears to be one of the favourites for the job.

Indeed, Richard Keys has even claimed the 42-year-old has agreed to take the job. The Spaniard is flying at Bayer Leverkusen, but is also wanted by Bayern Munich.

Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim is another in contention, while Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi has also been mentioned over the weekend.

Indeed, it’s been claimed that Edwards himself has De Zerbi on his list if he can’t get Xabi Alonso in.

And according to the Daily Mail, it looks like Richard Hughes is also a massive fan of the Italian.

Richard Hughes a big admirer of Roberto De Zerbi

According to the report from the Mail today, Liverpool are indeed having a look at De Zerbi.

It’s reported that Richard Hughes is a massive admirer of the Italian coach and even tried to get him to Bournemouth when Scott Parker moved on.

The 44-year-old is one of the Premier League’s best up and coming coaches and his work at Brighton has been widely lauded all season.

Quite whether Liverpool can come to terms with Brighton to secure his release, remains to be seen.

But with Hughes a fan as well as Edwards, the Italian looks like being as good a shout as anyone for the job.

Liverpool’s next manager getting closer

With all the different reports coming out, it does feel like Liverpool are maybe approaching the point where they make a move for someone.

De Zerbi is obviously someone who is getting some momentum. And if it was to be the Brighton boss, then you’d imagine most Liverpool fans will be happy.

Of course, the name of Alonso brings with it the nostalgia and club legend element.

But De Zerbi has so much going for him as well and Edwards and Hughes are likely to put club affiliation to one side to make sure they get their appointment right.
