Finance expert outlines how long Leicester City FFP case could actually go on for

Leicester City are facing a potential points deduction next season after breaching Profit and Sustainability regulations during the 2022/23 season.

The East Midlands club have been in the media for all of the wrong in recent weeks and uncertain times lie ahead.

The English Football League placed them under player registration embargo last week and City released a pretty strong statement shortly afterwards, with part of it reading: “LCFC has been compelled today to issue two urgent legal proceedings against the Premier League and the EFL. LCFC will be seeking that each of these proceedings is determined by an appropriate and fully independent legal panel.”

With two legal proceedings against the Premier League and the EFL now expected to commence over the coming months, it has led many to question when this will all be resolved.

Football Finance expert Kieran Maguire has all of the answers.

Speaking on his Price of Football podcast, Maguire went into detail on how long it may take for City to be officially punished by the Premier League and or the EFL.

“We’re going to potentially end up with four sets of proceedings, two of which will come under the Premier League handbook and two of which will be guided by the EFL handbook.

“It looks like they’re going to be called arbitral proceedings and what happens is that there will be a panel of three people who will need to be appointed, then there will be a chair who has 14 days to effectively set the terms of reference and decide how the evidence will be committed.

“But it could take up to six months for a resolution to this.”

Such revelation will be somewhat concerning to City supporters but it does, however, appear likely that any forthcoming points deduction won’t be applied this season.

Leicester City may not find out the outcome until September

There is a scenario where Leicester go through the entire transfer window and the start of next season without knowing their potential punishment.

That leaves a cloud of uncertainty around the club and surely leaves massive question marks on what they can do in the transfer market.

It’s a pretty messy situation at present and one that can’t be any good for Enzo Maresca and his players heading into the business end of the season.

Leicester reside second in the Championship, level on points with Leeds United with a game in hand.

Recent results have seen them dragged back into the chasing pack and promotion now seems to be in real jeopardy.

Maresca must get his side focused and raring to go for the clash at Ashton Gate to face Bristol City at the end of the month.
