Why Koppen should make transfer decision on playmaker who could be Gers Ilkay Gundogan

Rangers have several areas that need to be addressed in the summer as Philippe Clement looks to add a more personal touch to his team.

The Gers boss will want to mould a squad in his own image and players who are robust and dynamic will be top of that list – quality will also be key.

Potential names are starting to emerge, although nothing really exciting has yet to stick out, Rangers should be wary of one name in particular that Philippe Clement has been linked with, despite a stellar comparison.

Rangers taking a new transfer approach with Philippe Clement

Nils Koppen has revamped the scouting and recruitment department already.

The Dutchman only arrived from PSV Eindhoven in the new year but has already made an impact on the transfer front.

Oscar Cortes arrived via a meeting with his representatives at TransferRoom with the recruitment director also attending the recent meeting in Rome.

No longer will Rangers be using an old Excel spreadsheet with names of players who used to be good.

What the approach will also see, is a greater use of statistics.

With this in mind, it’s easy to see why Callum O’Hare of Coventry City was linked earlier this month.

The 25-year old attacking midfielder has been impressive form this season with nine goals and four assists to his name and has drawn comparisons with a modern day great.

Why Rangers don’t need O’Hare despite Gundogan comparison

Ilkay Gundogan was a key man for Pep Guardiola and has played over 40 games for Barcelona this season.

It might seem strange, but crunching the numbers on DataMB shows that, in terms of progressive carries, forward passes and key passes, O’Hare is comparable to Gundogan.

Two issues though.

Rangers don’t need another attacking midfielder or number 10.

At the last count, we still have Sam Lammers, Ianis Hagi and Alex Lowry on the books and they aren’t even at the club.

Add these names to Tom Lawrence and Todd Cantwell and it is easy to see why another playmaker isn’t necessary – even if they do play like Gundogan.

Throw in the fact that he has not long returned from anterior cruciate ligament surgery and Koppen needs no other reason to rule out any prospective move.

Thanks, but no thanks.
