Newcastle United are now considered to be leading the race to sign a young defender who’s been compared to Mats Hummels.
Eddie Howe’s injury crisis has been quite remarkable this season, something that has killed any real chance of progress.
Fans will have been devastated to see Sven Botman join Nick Pope and Joelinton on the long-term injury list, three of the club’s most crucial players.
Eddie Howe will definitely require better strength in depth next season, even if the club aren’t playing European football.
It seems as if Newcastle will need something akin to a squad overhaul, replacing some of their fringe players, the likes of Paul Dummett and Matt Targett for example, with players intended for the future.
That being said, Newcastle are now thought to be leading the race to sign Juventus defender Dean Huijsen this summer.
According to De Telegraaf, Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund are considered to be ‘serious candidates’ to sign the 18-year-old who has a price tag of around £26m.

The report says that Dortmund consider Huijsen to be a natural successor to Hummels, who is now 35-years-old.
6ft 4in Huijsen is currently on loan at Roma where he’s made 12 Serie A appearances this season.
The Spanish youth international was imagined to have a bigger role at his parent club by now, leading to the idea he will depart if things don’t improve.
De Telegraaf did mention that Juventus would be keen to use the youngster in a swap deal for Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners, but any deal would surely be quite difficult.
Therefore, it seems both Newcastle and Dortmund would be in a good position to approach a deal for a defender who certainly won’t mind being compared to Hummels.
Perhaps Hujisen’s profile could perfectly suit Newcastle, someone who will demand minutes but could similarly be rotated in and out of the side.
Definitely one to keep an eye on, and speaking of such, Newcastle have a much more expensive defender in their sights too.
