'Didn't quite work out': Micah Richards says he thought £11m player would be a superstar at Arsenal

Arsenal have had some disappointing big name signings over the years.

The likes of Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette and Willian all didn’t live up to expectations after arriving at the Emirates.

As good as Arsenal’s recruitment has been in recent years, there was a time when the Gunners were having more misses than hits.

Cast your mind back 10 years and you’ll remember a very intriguing summer transfer window off the back of the departure of Robin Van Persie.

The Gunners made a number of big name signings that summer, and they didn’t come much bigger than Lukas Podolski.

The former Koln striker had made quite the name for himself with his performances for Germany at numerous international tournaments, and when he arrived in the Premier League, he arrived with big expectations.

Speaking on the BBC Match of the Day Top 10 Podcast, Micah Richards has been discussing Podolski’s time at Arsenal, and he says that he expected so much more from the attacker when he was in north London.

Micah Richards expected more from Lukas Podolski at Arsenal

Richards and Alan Shearer spoke about Podolski as the ranked the greatest German players in Premier League history.

“He had a great left foot, but he only had about 60 appearances, so that’s why I had him at number 10,” Shearer said.

“Yeah, he was great for Germany though wasn’t he? When he came over here I thought he was going to be brilliant, but it didn’t quite work out for him. He got 19 goals in 60, but you wanted a bit more from him,” Richards said.

Lukas Podolski could’ve been amazing

If there’s a work to sum up Podolski’s time at Arsenal, it’s frustrating.

We all knew how good the striker could be – we’d seen it enough with Germany, but for some reason, it just didn’t click at the Emirates.

Perhaps Arsene Wenger’s style of play was a bit too delicate for the German who had been used to the high intensity of the Bundesliga for so long, but, for one reason or another, it just didn’t happen.

Podolski could’ve been a star for Arsenal, but instead, he was a rather underwhelming £11m signing.
