Poveda & two other Sheffield Wednesday stars who could follow Rohl if Sunderland hire him - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday could be in store for a very testing summer.

Last week, reports emerged claiming that Sunderland are interested in Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl ahead of the summer.

The German has wowed Owls fans since arriving in October and his positive performances clearly haven’t gone unnoticed.

Sunderland could deal Dejphon Chansiri a hammer-blow if they poach Rohl in the summer, with relegation to League One bound to push Rohl towards the Hillsborough exit door.

And relegation combined with Rohl leaving would surely push a number of players out of S6 as well.

Here we look at three players who could eventually follow Rohl to Sunderland, should he head there in the summer…

Di’Shon Bernard

The Jamaican international is out of contract in the summer, after the ex-Manchester United youngster joined on a free transfer last summer.

Bernard has impressed this season and Rohl is keen to keep the 23-year-old at Sheffield Wednesday beyond this season.

But if Wednesday are relegated then Bernard will surely consider his options as a free agent, with plenty of Championship clubs bound to fancy a move.

Described as a ‘Rolls Royce’ defender by fans due to his all-round ability and physicality at the back, Bernard has an average Sofascore rating of 6.83 this season, and could be perfect for Sunderland who are lacking centre-backs right now.

The man on loan from Leeds United is another name who’s impressed this season.

Joining on deadline day, Poveda has become an instant fan favourite for his dazzling performances on the wing and in the no.10 role, showcasing not only his versatility but his speed and trickery as well.

He’d no doubt have liked more assists or goals by now, with just the one assist to his name, but playing in a more positive Sunderland side could really see the 23-year-old blossom on that front.

Poveda is set to leave Leeds United this summer and Sheffield Wednesday fancy a permanent move, but again, if the Owls are relegated, Poveda surely secures a better move.

Dominic Iorfa

Iorfa would be a bit of a wildcard signing for Sunderland given the fact he’s 28 years old, and Sunderland only really sign players below a certain age.

But there’s grumbles within the Sunderland fan base that the club needs more experienced players and Iorfa could be a shrewd addition.

Under Rohl, Iorfa has played at right-back and at centre-back, oftentimes flourishing in both positions; against Plymouth Argyle in particular, Iorfa showed his ability to get forward and start attacks from the back.

He’s a player who really suits the style of play that Rohl likes and if he too becomes a free agent, he’ll surely have interest from the Championship.
