Liverpool should sign 24-year-old Richard Hughes brought to Bournemouth, Jurgen Klopp watched him - opinion

One of the most interesting questions ahead of the summer transfer window for Liverpool could be what the future holds in the left-back department. Most of the other areas on the pitch are well-stocked for Liverpool.

Last season, the Reds invested wisely into the midfield, and now have plenty of options in the middle of the park. Especially, with new and exciting young talent coming through in the likes of Bobby Clark, Stefan Bajcetic, James McConnell and Tyler Morton.

Up top in attack, Liverpool have an abundance of quality so unless someone leaves, the Reds are unlikely to invest in a forward player. At the back, the centre-back area is probably one Liverpool will explore, especially with Joel Matip set to leave upon the expiry of his contract.

However, by far the most interesting area to watch for Liverpool this summer could be the left-back position. Andy Robertson currently has two years left on his contract, and he hasn’t quite reached the high standards he has previously set this season. Kostas Tsimikas, on the other hand will not be satisfied with being a squad player forever. He is approaching the age where he is getting to his prime years, and he will want to play regular football.

Why Leif Davis could be Liverpool’s perfect transfer target

Given Robertson is not hitting the standards he has set, and Tsimikas may be open to leaving for pastures new, Liverpool could explore the left-back market this summer. If they do, the club’s new sporting director, Richard Hughes, could easily be looking at a potential candidate who he has already signed.

Back in 2021, Hughes brought Leif Davis on loan to Bournemouth in a move which didn’t necessarily work out for the player nor the club. However, since then the 24-year-old has gone onto reach great heights at Ipswich.

Last season in League One, Davis made 17 goal contributions for Ipswich Town and helped them to promotion. This season in the Championship, he has elevated his game even more. He so far has 18 goal contributions and is fighting to be promoted to the Premier League with Ipswich.

A direct left-back, who is excellent on the ball and capable of putting in fantastic deliveries, Davis would tick a lot of boxes for Liverpool. AsKlopp said it himself recently in a press conference ahead of Liverpool’s match with Southampton, the Championship has improved a lot. The Liverpool manager even claimed to have watched Davis’ team in action.

“I love the Championship,” Klopp said. “I watched Leeds v Leicester last week. Wow. The football intensity in the Championship is absolutely insane. Saw West Brom recently, a real football-playing idea. Ipswich as well. The league is incredibly difficult.”

Davis’ current deal expires in 2025 at Ipswich, though the club have the option to extend that by another year. Nonetheless, right now feels like the perfect time for Liverpool to explore a move. The fact that Hughes has previously been an admirer and brought him to Bournemouth means this move may just make perfect sense.
