‘iPhone finger’ is the latest trend to send social media into chaos, and you may have it

Social media addicts are fearing for their health as some admitted to having what is now known as an iPhone finger.

Despite the chaos currently boiling on apps like TikTok, the iPhone finger is not actually a new concept. The subject was being written about as early as 2020, though it was instead dubbed smartphone pinky.

Is the iPhone finger dangerous?

Whatever you want to call it, iPhone finger (@radiotj) gained a massive amount of attention this week after a clip from The TJ Show was posted to TikTok. The video has since garnered over 6.7 million views and 123k likes.

“The way we hold our phones sometimes with the weight of the phone resting on your pinky finger,” the host explained. “It creates an indentation that actually changes the way your pinky looks.”

To see if you have a technology finger simply hold up your hands and check for a noticeable indent on your dominant finger pinky.

Naturally, you might wonder whether having an iPhone finger is detrimental to your health. Thankfully, it is not.

Speaking to KSTU, occupational therapist Andrew Bracken explained: “It’s not an official medical diagnosis. You’re using your pinky to stabilize and support your smartphone, and you literally indent the side of your pinky from holding your phone.

While the indent does not pose any imminent risk, the expert did warn about the potential for it to develop into other illnesses.

“They’ll develop numbness in their pinky finger and along the side of their hand,” Bracken said. “It’s the angle of their wrist and their elbow that contributes to that numbness and that can lead to some real serious consequences if not addressed.”

A lot of people have it

TikTok users flooded the comments with their own diagnoses, with many admitting to having iPhone finger, or at least the Android version.

One person said: “Another reason why Galaxy’s are better. we don’t get iPhone finger.”

“I got Samsung finger…thank God I don’t have iPhone finger..” a second person said, while a third added, “I’ve got some indent on both fingers.”

Thankfully, there is a simple fix in the form of a Popsocket that sits on the back of your phone.
