Report: Manchester United now want to speak to 'huge' 40-year-old manager, he's aware of their interest

With Manchester United currently enduring another below-par season, speculation about Erik ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford continues to do the rounds.

Admittedly, the Red Devils aren’t too far off the top five, and a late push for a Champions League spot isn’t an impossibility either.

However, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe‘s INEOS group now in charge of football operations at Man United, there could well be changes in the summer.

The new regime, led by INEOS director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford, is looking to build a new coaching structure led by a head coach, according to ESPN.

The outlet has reported that the Red Devils have expressed an interest to talk to one of the Premier League’s best up-and-coming managers about a role at M16.

Apparently, Man United are looking to get in contact with Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Gary O’Neil.

In addition, ESPN have claimed that the 40-year-old has been made aware of the Red Devils’ interest in his services.

However, the report doesn’t specify whether Man United want O’Neil as their new manager. Apparently, the Red Devils are looking to bolster their entire coaching setup.

Man United have reportedly also assessed Gareth Southgate, Roberto De Zerbi and Thomas Frank as potential successors to Ten Hag.

What has been said about Manchester United target Gary O’Neil?

O’Neil is a quality manager who Jamie Carragher has previously hailed for the “huge impact” he made at Bournemouth.

The 40-year-old has kept up the good work at Wolves, with Paul Merson telling Sportskeeda that he’s a “brilliant” coach who’s “not far off getting an even better job”.

You’d think that O’Neil would jump at the opportunity to take the reins at Manchester United. However, if he’s being lined up as a coach, then it seems less likely he’d take that up.

O’Neil’s stock is rising as a first-team manager, so you’d think he would want to get a head coach’s job as his next role. Let’s see what happens in the coming months.
