'Going to get some headlines': Joe Cole calls for Gareth Southgate to drop Man United player for Euro 2024

Joe Cole has suggested that one Manchester United player should be dropped from England’s Euro 2024 squad.

Manchester United could have at least four players heading to the Euros this summer, depending on injuries.

Kobbie Mainoo has impressed over the past week after earning his first call-up to Gareth Southgate’s squad. After a Man of the Match display against Belgium last night, the 18-year-old has potentially played his way into the squad ahead of the summer.

As for Luke Shaw, he remains integral to Southgate’s side but did miss out on friendlies against Brazil and Belgium due to injury.

The same can be said for Harry Maguire in terms of his importance to Southgate but he was forced off with an injury in the defeat to Brazil.

Marcus Rashford was involved in both squads over the past week but managed just 15 minutes at Wembley on Saturday.

The 26-year-old was an unused substitute in last night’s 2-2 draw with Belgium and Joe Cole feels he could miss out on this summer’s tournament in Germany.

Cole calls for Southgate to drop Rashford for Euro 2024

Speaking on Channel 4, Cole suggested that he’d select the likes of Jarrod Bowen and Cole Palmer over the United star.

“You are going to get some headlines and there is a reason for putting players in and leaving players out,” the Chelsea legend said. “Again, with Marcus, I love him as a player. I think he is a top-class player but he’s had an indifferent season.

“There have been ups and downs and that’s been right the away through his career, he’s hit the heights. And I just think I wouldn’t start him in my England team, because my front three would be Kane, Saka and Foden and then I start thinking about that’s my front three if everyone is fit.

“Then where am I going to get bang for my buck? I just question is he at the stage of his career where he’s at it, and every minute on that pitch for England is as meaningful for him as it is for someone like Jarrod Bowen and if he goes to the Euros and plays one minute he will be the proudest man in the country and Cole Palmer.

“I’m thinking for tournaments to come they are going to be England players.”

Will Southgate pick Rashford?

Rashford has been an important part of Southgate’s squad over the past few years and impressed at the World Cup in 2022.

The forward also featured regularly from the bench at the last Euros, where England made the final.

Yet, there’s no getting away from the fact that Rashford’s form has dipped this season and there are players in his position who are performing at a higher level right now.

The fact that Rashford was only handed 15 minutes over the last two friendlies will also be a concern for the United star.

Nevertheless, it would be a brave decision to leave Rashford out as he’s provided for England at major tournaments in the past.
