‘Kane-like’: TalkSPORT pundit now suggests £60m striker who Tottenham want to sign reminds him of Harry Kane

Andy Townsend has suggested that a Tottenham Hotspur target reminds him of Spurs’ all-time top goalscorer Harry Kane.

Tottenham are yet to bring in a like-for-like replacement for Harry Kane after the Englishman joined Bayern Munich over the summer.

Heung-min Son has excelled while playing as a striker and has netted 14 times while providing eight assists in the Premier League this term.

Despite Richarlison’s exceptional run of form between December and February, Spurs are still lacking a player who can provide a real physical presence up front.

Whether or not Tottenham opt to bring in that kind of striker remains to be seen. But they have been continuously linked with a move for Ivan Toney.

Indeed, it was claimed on Monday that Spurs were very interested to see how the Brentford striker fared for England against Belgium last night.

And off the back of Toney netting his first England goal from the spot, he’s earned comparisons to Kane.

Tottenham target Toney compared to Kane

Speaking on talkSPORT, Andy Townsend discussed who should go to Euro 2024 as Kane’s deputy.

The pundit was asked if he believes Toney’s link-up play puts him ahead of Ollie Watkins.

“Yes, I think it does,” he said. “I think he’s very good at that. He does that for his club very naturally, he’s not the quickest.”

All McCoist then asked: “Do you think he’s more Kane-like than Watkins?”

“I think he’s more Harry Kane-like than Watkins,” Townsend said. “Nobody in the Premier League works harder than Ollie Watkins – chasing into the gullies, chasing a lost cause, making something out of nothing as well as getting his goals.

“But I just think Ivan Toney’s got that little bit of an advantage when it comes to getting hold of the ball, dripping 10 yards deeper and having people run beyond him. I think he’s particularly good at linking with those sort of players.

“Again, I think he just gets the nod in that respect if that’s what Gareth wants, or is he going to go for something different, maybe?”

Could Toney replace Kane?

In terms of attributes, Toney is probably the most similar striker on the market should Tottenham wish to replace Kane.

The Brentford star is exceptional in the air, boasts a decent range of passing and most importantly, he’s a lethal finisher.

With Brentford reportedly set to demand around £60 million for the striker, he could tick plenty of boxes for Spurs.

Of course, replacing Kane with a player of similar quality is a near-impossible task for Tottenham. But snapping up someone like Toney could provide Ange Postecoglou with a prolific goalscorer.
