'Confident' 21-year-old is suddenly about to play a lot more for Newcastle United this season - opinion

Lewis Miley is the next player to join Newcastle United’s injury list, which could mean one of his teammates has to play a lot more this season.

The 17-year-old has suffered a back injury during the international break that could rule him out for the next six weeks. Lewis Miley has been away with the England Under-20s, and there is even a chance that the injury could mean that his season is now over.

It is a real blow for the teenager, who has been enjoying a breakthrough season at St James’ Park. He has done so well, and given Toon fans an exciting glimpse into what will be a very bright future.

The injury means that Eddie Howe is short on midfielders. Joelinton is also still injured, while Sandro Tonali continues to serve his suspension.

But one player who is now available is Elliot Anderson, and the injury to Miley could result in Howe heavily relying on the 21-year-old.

Elliot Anderson has recently recovered from an injury of his own

The midfielder has missed a large part of this season with a back injury. It was an odd injury, and one that took him a long time to recover from.

But Anderson is back now, having featured off the bench in Newcastle’s previous four games. One of those was the FA Cup triumph over Blackburn Rovers where he scored in the penalty shootout.

He has slowly been playing more and more minutes as he regains his fitness, while the warm weather training camp to Dubai has to have helped his condition ahead of the final 10 Premier League games of the season.

And with Miley out and Sean Longstaff nursing an injury of his own, Howe is going to have to turn to Anderson a lot.

Elliot Anderson can make up for lost time after bright start to Newcastle’s season

It will give him the opportunity to make up for lost time, having played a lot of football at the start of the campaign before suffering his back problem.

That was a real blow, at a time when he was doing very well at senior level. He was playing regularly, having excelled during Newcastle’s pre-season.

This has not proved to be the breakout season we expected from Anderson, but there is still time. As Callum Wilson says, he is a ‘confident lad’, and someone who now has the opportunity to play a major role in saving Newcastle’s season.

As one door closes, another one opens, and that is why Elliot Anderson could suddenly be about to play a lot more following Lewis Miley’s injury.
