Report: Newcastle now identify a new position they want to strengthen in this summer, despite £28m deal

Newcastle United officials are currently deciding which positions they need to strengthen in during the summer transfer window.

A central defender will definitely be on the club’s agenda, and the injury to Sven Botman has only increased Newcastle United’s need to bring one in.

Elsewhere, it has been claimed that Newcastle want to improve on the right of attack, while they are also keen to bring in a new striker. That will be particularly pressing if Callum Wilson leaves St James’ Park, which has been rumoured.

It looks likely to be a summer of change on Tyneside, and a new report from Sky Sports has named a completely new position that Newcastle United intend to strengthen in this summer.

Newcastle want to sign a left-back this summer

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle United are going to target a left-back during this summer’s transfer window. They also state that the Magpies want a right winger and a striker.

It is no surprise that Eddie Howe’s side are looking to strengthen there, as left-back has been a problem position all season. Dan Burn has really struggled for form, while Matt Targett has been missing for most of the campaign due to injury. As for Lewis Hall, Howe has been unwilling to trust the 19-year-old in Premier League games.

This appears to be the first time that Newcastle’s desire to sign a left-back has been reported, but it makes sense. However, it does come at a time when the club are already set to sign a left-sided defender.

Newcastle are already set to sign Lewis Hall from Chelsea

Newcastle’s first signing this summer will be the aforementioned Lewis Hall. He is currently on loan from Chelsea, but that deal will become permanent for £28million at the end of the season.

The Magpies have an obligation to buy the teenager, depending on where they finish in the Premier League. It has been claimed that anything from 15th upwards will be enough to trigger the deal, so it is therefore all but certain that Newcastle will be signing Hall.

But he might not be the only left-back who Newcastle sign. They appear to be looking for another player in that position, which is not great news for Hall.

The only saving grace for him would be if someone like Lloyd Kelly arrives. He is a target for the Magpies, and is set to be available on a free transfer. The Bournemouth man is primarily a centre-back, but can also play as a full-back. In that respect, he is very similar to Burn.

Signing someone like him would perhaps not dent Hall’s long-term future at St James’ Park, but questions would be raised about his £28million arrival if Newcastle were to splash out on another left-back this summer.
