The Taiwanese government is confident that the US support will remain unchanged regardless of the outcome of the presidential elections, but the department will closely monitor to ensure that Taiwanese-Chinese issues are not manipulated during the election campaign, according to Reuters.
In a report to lawmakers, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that while the outcome of the US election was undecided, the island received bipartisan support.
It emphasized that Taiwan will continue to maintain a balanced exchange of views with both sides, but it needs to carefully monitor how Taiwan-China issues may play out in the elections.
"As the US election heats up, we should beware of cross-Taiwan Strait issues being manipulated as a political issue of defence and attack," the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
China's plans for an attack on Taiwan and the US reaction
In the spring of 2022, President Joe Biden stated that the US is prepared to use force to defend Taiwan.
Last fall, the head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Charles Brown, publicly doubted Beijing's plans to try to seize Taiwan by military means.
Recently, Bloomberg reported that a Chinese military invasion of Taiwan would cost the global economy $10 trillion and could occur as early as 2027.
Director of the US Central Intelligence Agency William Burns stated that the Chinese army could achieve full readiness for an attack on Taiwan as early as 2027. Expert Yurii Poyta commented to RBC-Ukraine that as of today, this timeframe has shifted to 2030.
