Exclusive: Aston Villa face ‘tough’ scenario with 22-year-old’s future this summer

Aston Villa are braced to have a busy summer in the transfer window with Unai Emery and Monchi set to be on the prowl for added quality however, an update has now been shared over one potential exit.

Unai Emery will entertain his second summer transfer window in charge of Aston Villa, with the hope that the Spaniard can orchestrate movements as strong as last year.

The window of 2023 saw key players such as Pau Torres, Moussa Diaby and Youri Tielemans join the club, with Nicolo Zaniolo and Clement Lenglet also joining the manager’s project in a summer that bolstered the quality in the squad.

With the end of the 2023/24 campaign in sight and a Champions League spot there for Villa to claim, the speculation regarding the transfer window has already started, in what could be a vital period for the club’s progression.

While the focus is expected to be on potential incomings, there could be some change when it comes to players that could leave Villa Park, with conversations over Profit and Sustainability Rules set to come into play.

Could Aston Villa sell Jacob Ramsey in the summer transfer window?

After reporting a loss of £119.6m in their end-of-year accounts, there has been word that Villa may need to balance their books to adhere to financial rulings ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

For that reason, there has also been talk on the future of one of the Villans’ most profitable players, with Bodymoor Heath graduate Jacob Ramsey identifying as the best option for the club to part ways with in the instance of needing to generate profit.

Speaking exclusively to Aston Villa News on the topic, HITC journalist Graeme Bailey shared an update on Villa’s potential stance surrounding the 22-year-old.

“It’s one of those where he’s a high-quality player as we know, is he guaranteed to start in the Villa team? Probably not.”

“It touches on profit and sustainability but it’s just one of those where if someone’s offering £40m, £50m, £60m for someone who isn’t first choice then it just makes the club think.”

“They’re a very well-run club, obviously they don’t want to lose him but it’s tough, at 22 he’s started less than 10 games, it’s one where I don’t think they’re desperately looking to sell but clearly any homegrown player, it does help with profit and sustainability.”

“I don’t think they’re looking to sell but he is one who if they did have to move someone for profit and sustainability reasons, he’s the easiest sale because it is pure profit.”

The future of Jacob Ramsey could be an interesting topic in the summer

Having only secured eight starts in the Premier League this season, it’s been a particularly difficult campaign for Ramsey, coming off the back of the highs of last term.

In the 2022/23 calendar, the 22-year-old scored six goals and claimed seven assists, securing 31 starts in 35 appearances, making himself a vital cog in Emery’s squad.

Unfortunately, the season didn’t start as the Englishman would have hoped, suffering a broken foot at the U21 European Championships, followed by sustaining several other injuries throughout the campaign.

While the midfielder’s lack of game time has been more a result of his battles for fitness, it opens an interesting debate over whether the Villans would be more willing to part ways with the academy graduate in the summer if the right price was uttered.

As reported in the January window, there hasn’t been a lack of interest in the Englishman’s services, with clubs such as Spurs, Bayern Munich and Newcastle said to admire the valuable asset’s ability.

Bailey’s comments open discussion over what the right price would be to allow Ramsey to depart, with his future having the potential to open doors for Villa in the summer transfer window.
