16-year-old charged after throwing a punch that lands man in hospital, cops say

A 16-year-old was arrested earlier this week and charged with aggravated assault after authorities said he punched a man in the head, leaving him hospitalized, Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay said Thursday.

Mt. Ephraim police responded to the Walgreen’s at 20 West Kings Highway at about 10:40 p.m. on Mar. 23 for a report of an unconscious man, authorities said. Police found a 46-year-old Mount Ephraim man on the ground suffering from an apparent head injury, authorities said. He was taken to Cooper University Hospital, where he remains in critical condition, according to officials.

Investigators alleged a teenager from Collingswood had punched the man in the head, causing him to fall and hit his head on the ground, authorities said.

U.S. Marshals arrested the 16-year-old in Cherry Hill on Monday without incident. He was remanded to the Camden County Youth Detention Center, according to officials.

The investigation is ongoing and the prosecutor’s office declined to provide charging documents based on the defendant’s status as a juvenile.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the prosecutor’s office major crimes unit at 856-225-8414 or the Mount Ephraim police department at 856-931-2225.
