Alleged gunman arrested in shooting at N.J. warehouse that left man critically wounded

An Essex County resident was arrested Friday afternoon after he was accused of shooting a man inside a Linden warehouse earlier, police said.

Daniel Corprew, 53, of South Orange, was charged with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault and multiple weapons-related offenses, the Linden Police Department announced Friday night.

Officers were called to Maximum Quality Foods, a food services distributor, around 6 a.m. and found a 43-year-old Elizabeth man had been shot multiple times, the department said. He was treated on scene and rushed to Newark University Hospital in critical condition.

Corprew fled before police arrived, but was he quickly identified as a suspect, authorities said. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was taken into custody during a motor vehicle stop by Newark Police officers around 1:30 p.m. A stolen handgun was recovered during the arrest.

Corprew also faces additional, unspecified weapons-related charges in Newark. He was taken to the Essex County Jail pending his first court appearance, police said.

“I am very proud of the responding officers who provided life-saving aid to the victim and took immediate action to protect others in the area, and of the detectives who worked so quickly to bring forth these charges,” Linden Police Chief David Hart said in a statement. “The collective efforts of these officers, and the cooperation of our law enforcement partners, send a clear message that violent crime like this will never be tolerated in the workplace, or anywhere else in our community,”

The shooting victim remained in critical but stable condition Friday night.
