‘Right up there with Liverpool’: Luton boss Rob Edwards makes claim about Tottenham after yesterday’s game

Luton Town boss has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are ‘right up there with Liverpool’ when it comes to one key area of their game.

Tottenham picked up a narrow 2-1 win over the Hatters on Saturday thanks to Heung-min Son’s late winner.

It was a cruel blow for Rob Edwards after his side were very much in the game for the majority of the 90 minutes.

Tahith Chong had opened the scoring inside three minutes and Spurs eventually found a leveller just six minutes after halftime.

Despite falling behind early, Tottenham dominated the game and deservedly picked up three points after creating plenty of chances on the day.

And Edwards was impressed with one area of Spurs’ game, claiming Ange Postecoglou’s side are ‘up there with Liverpool’ in terms of pressing their opponents.

Edwards makes claim about Tottenham after Spurs beat Luton

Speaking to the media following yesterday’s game, the Luton boss praised Spurs for regaining possession quickly.

“I’ve got to give the [Luton] players so much credit,” Edwards said. “To be competitive with the amount of players missing, I think the lads deserve a lot of credit.

“The effort was there, played really well when we could. Tottenham, they press you and they react so well, they’re the best, probably right up there with Liverpool, with their quick regains and especially high up the pitch. It’s difficult to get out at times.”

Tottenham vs Luton in numbers

The statistics certainly reflected what was a dominant display from Spurs yesterday.

According to WhoScored, Tottenham managed 69 per cent possession, 17 shots on goal and a pass completion rate of 85 per cent.

Statistics site FotMob also notes that Spurs created 2.99 xG on the day in comparison to Luton’s 0.52.

Postecoglou sets his sides up to play on the front foot and it’s interesting to hear Edwards compare Spurs to Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have arguably been one of the best pressing teams in Europe over the past few seasons.

While there have been some groans about Spurs’ performances of late, it’s important to remember where Tottenham were when Postecoglou took over last summer.

The north Londoners had been playing a pragmatic style of football under the Aussie’s predecessors.

There’s no doubt that Spurs have a long way to go but the improvement under Postecoglou’s guidance has been evident.
