'It's nuts': Journalist really can't believe one thing that Sheffield Wednesday haven't done this season

Sheffield Wednesday have been told one thing that has been absolutely ‘nuts’ about their season so far.

While Sheffield Wednesday have looked drastically better in attack in recent months, their ability to put the ball in the back of the net has been significantly lower than most of the Championship.

The Owls have scored the second-least goals (31), and have the second-least shots on target (123), while they have the seventh-lowest xG (40.5).

The team have struggled to create as many chances or penetrate the box as much as they need to, and as a result, they have failed to win games that they probably should have – like Friday’s draw with Swansea City.

But while many other teams may be better than them at scoring goals from open play, they have also felt the benefit of being on the receiving end of penalty calls too.

The teams battling for promotion – such as Leicester, Leeds United and Southampton – have had the most penalties this season, while many of the relegation candidates have received very few.

Sheffield Wednesday’s tally of penalties is by far the most mind-boggling though – being the only team in the whole of the Championship to not receive a spot-kick so far this campaign.

Sheffield Wednesday are ‘nuts’

Journalist Dom Howson couldn’t believe this given the Owls’ attacking football since Danny Rohl’s appointment in October.

Howson wrote on X: “It’s nuts to think we are 39 rounds into the Championship season and #SWFC still haven’t been awarded a penalty. Suppose it wasn’t a factor under Xisco Munoz as they had hardly any possession or final third entries. Way more attacking now Danny Röhl is at the wheel.”

Why haven’t the Owls received a penalty yet?

Sheffield Wednesday have been much better going forward under Danny Rohl, which does make it surprising that they haven’t received a penalty yet.

The Owls do have one of the lowest number of progressive carries in the second tier (533), which could contribute to their lack of final entries.

However, they have received the sixth-most free-kicks in the Championship (15), which suggests they have been causing problems elsewhere on the pitch, but just don’t seem to be able to find these chances in the box.

The Yorkshire outfit could really do with some luck with a few spot-kicks for the remainder of the season and could really prove to be the difference in some vital points in their race to avoid relegation.
