'Complex' ace & Premier League gem: 3 players Sheffield Wednesday could sign to replace Windass - opinion

Here are three players Sheffield Wednesday should try to sign if Josh Windass leaves this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are set for a mass clear out this summer, with eleven players out of contract at the end of the season.

While Barry Bannan is likely to stay at Hillsborough no matter what division they are in, many others will be waiting to see if the Owls are relegated or not, while there will be some who could be offloaded even if they confirm another season in the Championship.

Josh Windass is one man who could leave at the end of the season, while it is unclear whether the club are actually intending on offering him a new deal, or if he would even take it.

The 30-year-old has spent a large chunk of the campaign sidelined with an injury, and fans have begun to call for his exit, despite his contribution to last year’s promotion.

With the club likely to have very limited options in midfield after the summer exodus, here are three players they could look at to replace Windass.

Scott Twine – Burnley

Scott Twine well and truly lit up League One during the 2021-22 campaign, netting 20 goals and providing 13 assists.

The midfielder earned himself a move to Burnley, but struggled to force his way into the team as they flew high at the top of the Championship.

Twine then joined Hull City on loan last summer and picked up four goals and three assists, before spending the second half of the campaign with Bristol City.

After scoring on his debut, Twine then suffered an injury in January and didn’t return until before the international break.

The 24-year-old’s career since leaving MK Dons has been very stop-start, but is clearly still a very talented player.

The Clarets could potentially look to send him out on loan again this summer, and Danny Rohl could be the perfect man to get the best out of him.

Elliot Embleton – Sunderland

Elliot Embleton had been a regular for Sunderland before tearing his ankle ligaments in December 2022.

The ‘complex’ midfielder played a key role in Blackpool’s promotion in 2021, before returning to Wearside and helping them do the same – netting nine goals, including the opener in the play-off final.

Embleton then made 13 starts for the Black Cats in the Championship before he was sidelined, then picked up yet another injury after joining Derby County on loan.

He will be entering the final 12 months of his contract this summer and could potentially be moved on from Sunderland, but he still has plenty of years in football ahead of him as he approaches his 25th birthday.

His injury record could be risky, but Embleton is definitely a talented player and could be a huge asset for Sheffield Wednesday.

Shola Shoretire – Manchester United

Sheffield Wednesday could do well to snap up another Manchester United academy graduate, with Shola Shoretire currently smashing it with their U21 side.

The youngster previously disappointed during a loan spell with Bolton Wanderers, but is very highly-rated at Old Trafford and is set to sign a new contract with the club.

Shoretire now has seven goals and four assists in only nine games in Premier League 2 this term, and could be ready for a second loan in the next campaign.
